REVIEW: “Ur Ex From College”, a sweet and simple new single from carobae

With a brand new single, carobae is back for the new year and warming up to release her new EP, ‘The Longest Year: Part Two.’ Part One was a delightful sad-girl-pop tribute released back in September 2020. In an Instagram post, carobae (real name Caroline Baker) described 2020 as “the longest and craziest” year of her life yet – I think we can all relate. She says that writing helped her through all of that, and she wrote so much that she ended up with two EPs worth of songs.

So, here is our first glimpse at the second EP – as honest and heartbreaking as the first, it appears. In fact, ‘Ur Ex From College’ is even more laidback than anything on Part One of ‘The Longest Year’, and the soft piano and brief silences give Caroline the space to process her feelings aloud.

Baker’s lyricism describes the heartbreak of competing with someone’s first love – “you don’t know it yet but I do, she’ll always have that part of you” she sings candidly. It’s a simple line, but if it’s a situation the listener has been through then I’d imagine it hits pretty hard.

If breakup-bedroom-pop is your thing, there’s every chance ‘Ur Ex From College' will fit right into place with most of your playlist already. Keep an eye out for carobae’s release of 'The Longest Year: Part Two’ on her Twitter and Instagram, @carobaesucks.
