SHOW RECAP + GALLERY: Fontaines D.C. brings Romance to Boston, MA

Romance has been in my daily rotation since the release of its first single “Starburster” this past April. Fontaines D.C.’s fourth studio album, Romance, near-perfectly combines the best of their previous work - the gloomy and muddled durge of Skinty Fia crashes up against the raw energy and chaos of A Hero’s Death and Dogrel. It’s infectiously catchy with a re-listen value through the roof - I think my favorite track has shifted 5x over since the album’s drop in August.

Though I caught the group when they opened for the Arctic Monkeys on their most recent US run, seeing a FDC headliner is another beast entirely. With plenty of time to digest the album before their Boston date, fans were more than ready to hear the greatest hits of Romance come together on stage.

When it comes to their live shows, it seems like Fontaines enjoys the no-nonsense rock and roll approach. While the group did take small breaks in between songs to briefly address the crowd, a majority of their stage time was spent in action. Frontman Grian Chatten paced laps across the stage during grungy musical interludes, interrupting the chaos with his unmistakable vocal performance. The set featured quite a few tracks off their newest LP, but fans of the older albums were treated to quite a few hits - “Boys in the Better Land,” “Big,” & “I Love You” to name a few. Swipe through to see some shots from their set, as well as Fontaines' direct support, Been Stellar!

While the newly Grammy nominated group finishes up their US tour, I can’t recommend giving Romance a spin enough - the album has the perfect nostalgia factor for this time of the year as the days get shorter and the air is crisp.
