A lot has happened since Buzzkill last caught up with Wolf Alice.
With a Brit award for Best British Group, an NME award for Best Festival Headliner, a third Mercury Prize nomination for Blue Weekend, and a spot supporting Harry Styles' European stadium tour in 2022 alone, it's clear the group is still on the climb. Even in Boston, Wolf Alice has made a huge leaps, more than doubling the capacity of their last sold out show at Paradise Rock Club last November.
Korean-Canadian artist Luna Li started off the night with an incredible display of her multi-instrumental talent. As a singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, and producer, it seems that Luna Li really can do it all. With a mix of fully instrumental and more traditional bedroom pop tracks, Li's set gave a full look into her talents as an artist and demonstrated her songwriting prowess. Her ability to blend the best of dream pop, indie, and psychedelic rock is both unique and incredibly current, I can't recommend checking her out enough.
Wolf Alice is a force. They're "in your face" rock with an effortlessly cool edge, and they never seem to disappoint.
With a killer setlist and a sonic punch, Wolf Alice's performance reminded me just how much fun a live show can be. Guitarist Joff Oddie and bassist Theo Ellis played with inexhaustible energy, flanking singer Ellie Rowsell as she belted out some of their best including "Smile," "Bros," "Moaning Lisa Smile," and "Play The Greatest Hits." The set also carved space for some of the groups slower tracks like "The Last Man on Earth," "Safe From Heartbreak (if you never fall in love)," and "No Hard Feelings," which highlighted Rowsell's incredible vocal control and range.
It’s hard to imagine a band with the star power and critical acclaim of Wolf Alice being able to constantly outdo themselves, yet they continue to do it with ease. They’ll be touring across the US for the month of October before heading back to Europe for a few dates in Portugal and Spain, so be sure to check them out on this run if you can!
